Talented mare Hussterics, who resumes at Muswellbrook on Monday, has tested the patience of Scone trainer Paul Messara.
The four-year-old daughter of Hussonet has had just one racing preparation limited to two starts.
“She’s got ability but has soundness issues,” Messara said.
“It’s taken us a while to get her right. We’ve had to be very patient.”
Hussterics tackles the P Fitzsimons Business Lunch Benchmark 55 Hcp (1000m).
After a highly impressive debut 5-1/4 length win in an 1100m Scone maiden on February 7, Hussterics’ conformation problems surfaced.
The mare disappointed when last of 10 in a 1400m event at Newcastle 12 days later as the heavily backed $2.10 favourite.
Hussterics was spelled immediately and is first-up on Monday off a 211-day break.
Hussterics is out of the unraced Flying Spur mare Flying Single who was initially trained by Tony Vasil in Melbourne.
Messara said right from day one Hussterics showed talent and he was hopeful the mare could stand a decent preparation this campaign.
“Her first up win at Scone was impressive. She’d shown us plenty in the lead up,” Messara said.
“The problem is she’s a big heavy horse who can feel her legs.
“We swim her a lot and do as much as we can with her but it’s a balancing act.
“Immaturity has been a problem.
“Since she’s come back this time she’s matured a bit and I’m happy with her, given what we can do with the mare.
“She trialled good and has done well.
“I expect her to run very well on Monday.”
Hussterics has had two trials this campaign, finishing unplaced at Randwick in August then winning a 900m heat at Muswellbrook on August 29 when she won by 3-1/2 lengths in good time.
